Of all the days of this world, the most excellent are the Blessed Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah.
Allah has preferred the Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah over All the other Days of the year.
By the dawn, By the ten nights And by the even and the odd" surah al-Fajr 89:1-2

Dhul-Hijjah (the Month of Hajj) is the 12th month of the Islamic lunar year. It is during this month that the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, takes place. The actual pilgrimage rites take place on the 8th to 12th days of the month.According to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the first ten days of this month are a special time for devotion.

There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the hellfire than on the day of Arafah; on this day sins are forgiven, Allah becomes closer to his slaves, His Angels boast of the people standing on the plain of Arafah, as they stand, humbly, sacrificing, remembering Allah and seeking His forgiveness. This is the day of the Great Pilgrimage; a day of praise for Allah, a day of remembrance and repentance.

So fast this day of Arafah and make for yourselves a portion of Qu'ran to read or remembrance to make and seek His forgiveness, in the hope that He will accept it from you and shower you in His mercy, in both this life and the next. And who from us is not in need of this great bounty?

It was during the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijja that Allah accepted the repentance of Adam, when He relented toward him and restored him to His grace at Arafa.

It is recommended that we make takbir i.e. to say Allah Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), tahlil, la ilah illa Allah (there is no deity except Allah) and tahmid to praise Allah by saying al-hamdullilah hamdan kathiran.

No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these Days , the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The Companions submitted: 'O' Messenger of Allah, not even fighting (carrying on Jihad) in the cause of Allah? He (S.A.W) answered: yes not even Jihad in the cause of Allah except in the case of a person who goes on Jihad along with his life and his property and does not come back with either (i.e he is martyred in the Jihad) Tradition.

The question here then is, after knowing the virtue and excellence of these days, "What is preferred for us to do in these days and how can we benefit from them?" In fact the ways to do good are many and the gates to righteous action are wide and spacious and indeed, the bounty of Allah is even greater. As Allah reminds us in the Quran, "What ever you perform from good then you will find it with Allah and this is better for you and greater in reward." (73:20)

The Types of Deeds in These Ten Days:

First: The performance of Haj and Umrah,

''Performance of Umrah is an expiation of the sins committed between it and the previous Umrah, and the reward of the Haj which is accepted by Allah, the Most High, is nothing but Paradise.'' (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Second: Fasting during these days - as many of them as may be easy (for one to fast); especially the Day of Arafah.

Hadith Qudsee: Fasting is for Me, and it is I who give reward for it. Verily, someone gives up his sexual passion, his food and his drink for My sake..." (Al-Bukhaaree, Muslim

Third: At-Takbeer (Allah Akbar) and adh-Dhikr (the remembrance of Allah through different words of praise and glorification) in these (ten) days, Allah said "And mention the name of Allah on the appointed days"(12:28).

Fourth: At-Tawbah (repentance) and abstaining from disobedience and all types of sins, .

Fifth: Doing plenty of voluntary (nafl) righteous deeds of worship like Prayer, Charity, Jihaad, reading the Qur'an, Commanding what is Good and Forbidding what is Evil, and other such deeds.

Sixth: It is legislated in these days to make at-Takbeer al-Mutlaq at all times of night and day until the time of the Eid Prayer.

Seventh: The slaughtering of a sacrificial animal (Adhiyah) is also legislated for the Day of Sacrifice (10th) and the Days of Tashreeq (11th, 12th and 13th).

Tenth: After what has been mentioned, it is fitting that every Muslim, male and female, take advantage of these days by obeying Allah, the Most High, remembering Him, thanking Him, fulfilling all the obligatory duties, and staying far away from the prohibited things. He must take full advantage of this season, and the open display of Allah's gifts, to attain the pleasure of his Lord.

Surely, Allah, the Most High, is the One Who grants success, and He is the Guide to the Straight Path. And may the blessings of Allah, the Most High, and peace be upon Muhammad and his family and companions! "Those who would hasten to do good and supplicated to Us out of hope and fear and were humble." (21:90)
